Michael Beale known admirer of Alex Lowry as he watches Rangers B v Celtic

Michael Beale watched Alex Lowry in action as he featured for Rangers B team in Wednesday night’s City of Glasgow Cup final at Ibrox, as featured by the Rangers Review.

The manager was casting a look at Lowry, as well as the likes of Zak Lovelace and Bailey Rice with that trio having already made their debut at first-team level whether at Ibrox or elsewhere.

Celtic won the game on penalties, after a pulsating 3-3 draw over 90 minutes after the hosts came back from a three-goal deficit.

The report outlined a night of contrasting fortunes for the player, who must hit the ground over the summer once he is fully fit in order to hold down a regular place in the first-team squad.

“Lowry recently returned to fitness and he was afforded 75 minutes to impress against Celtic in front of the watchful eye of Michael Beale,” it said.

“He is a known admirer of the 19-year-old and it was noticeable that Rangers deployed a 4-3-1-2 formation, utilised by Beale in recent weeks.

“While it’s imperative to consider that he’s only recovering from injury, the Scotland youth international showed glimpses of promise rather than controlling the game – which he has the ability to do.”

Plenty to prove

Lowry possesses fantastic technical ability but there are other areas of his game in which he needs to improve his quality and consistency if he is ever to realise his significant potential, at Ibrox.

At B team level, he should be a dominant force, but that wasn’t the case in the Glasgow Cup final, although the player isn’t long back from injury.

Setbacks with his fitness as well as a devastating personal loss have meant this season has been one to forget, but the player faces a pivotal few months ahead. He must find his focus and take the right direction, once he is fully fit, in order to hold down a regular place in Beale’s squad.

The boss has spoken before about earning the right in training and being trusted by your teammates so it is fair to say that Lowry has plenty to prove in the months ahead.

Hopefully, he can channel his serious ability in the right way to make a proper breakthrough at Ibrox.
