Arsenal open to Auston Trusty transfer as Rangers news emerges

Arsenal are believed to be open to negotiations for Rangers transfer target Auston Trusty this summer, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday (8 May) that the Gers wanted to sign the Birmingham City loanee this summer and are “keen” on bring him to Ibrox in a £2million deal.

The 24-year-old has only been in English football for a single year, having been loaned straight out to the Championship outfit after arriving at the Emirates Stadium from MLS last summer.

“Arsenal are believed to be open to negotiations and Trusty could be brought in to compete with Connor Goldson, Ben Davies and John Souttar for a place in the heart of Beale’s defence,” the Scottish Daily Mail wrote. [9 May, page 69]

Competition needed

Although it looked like Goldson and Davies had forged a strong partnership in the heart of Rangers’ defence in the early days of Michael Beale’s era at Ibrox, this has started crumbling away in recent weeks.

Goldson will always be a starter for the Gers when fully fit, but both Davies and Souttar have shown defensive frailties in recent weeks, and this needs to be addressed in the transfer window.

With a centre-back position up for grabs and Arsenal open to negotiations for Trusty, this could be a deal worth pursuing.

The defender has been an ever-present for Birmingham City this season and impressed in what can be an overwhelmingly physical league for foreign players.

A move to Ibrox makes sense to all parties involved and would hopefully bolster the defensive ranks for Beale heading into next season.

The first-team squad is in major need of surgery this summer, and centre-back is one of their number one priorities.

In other Rangers news, a £20million transfer budget has been mooted to complete all of the necessary business during the window.
