Barry Ferguson shares Alfredo Morelos verdict after Rangers transfer latest

Barry Ferguson believes Alfredo Morelos will look back on his Rangers career with a hint of regret in the coming years.

After the weekend’s 1-0 victory against Aberdeen, Michael Beale confirmed that El Bufalo would be “moving on” from Ibrox when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Colombian has polarised opinion within the fanbase since arriving at Rangers in 2017, in which time he has netted 78 goals in 178 appearances.

“For £1million, I think he’s been good but could have done better,” Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show (8 May)

“That’s my honest opinion. I’ve always liked Morelos.

“See when he was on it, he was fit and his attitude was spot on, he was a real handful. This season? He’s been disappointing, no doubt about it.

“I think the best way to do it is, shake his hand and part ways. But he’ll look back in two or three years and think to himself: ‘I could have done better at Rangers’.

“No doubt in my mind about it.

“It’s the end of an era for some of these players. It happens in football. This is now the start of the major surgery when the likes of Kent and Morelos and others aren’t going to be offered new contracts.”

Fair assessment

Although Morelos has had his fair share of highlights in a Rangers top, he has been well under par this season.

In prior years the striker has always stepped in the big games and delivered the goods in Old Firm matches, however this term has been rather underwhelming.

The only real reason Beale has continually played the Colombian since his arrival at Ibrox is because of the lack of alternatives in attack.

Both Kemar Roofe and Antonio Colak have had injury-plagued campaigns, while Fashion Sakala doesn’t look quite ready to lead the line by himself.

However, with Beale insisting on the need for sweeping changes among his first team in order to close the gap to Celtic, Morelos was always going to be one of the first players out of the door.

Ferguson’s assessment of Morelos is fair and makes complete sense.

Morelos has provided the Gers with glimmers of brilliance, but you can’t but feel there has always been more left in the tank.
