Rangers ‘costly’ error sees £3m down drain at Ibrox after seven-figure Euro update

Rabbi Matondo’s time at Rangers has been a resounding failure – and the latest transfer news to emerge could well cast doubt over the Welshman’s future.

The 22-year-old arrived in the summer of 2022 for a fee believed to be in the region of £3million, having previously been signed for £11million by FC Schalke 04.

Injuries have certainly hampered the winger, and, at present, it’s unclear whether Michael Beale will be willing to include him in his first-team plans next season. The Glasgow Evening Times’ Chris Jack has even claimed the signing of Matondo could be a “costly mistake”.

An overhaul is on the way during the summer window. Beale is unhappy with his current options and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a number of new players arrive during the off-season.

Aris winger Luis Palma is the latest name to be linked with a move to Ibrox, with the Scotsman [02 May] claiming the 23-year-old Honduras international would command a seven-figure fee.

The Transfer Geek also suggested (28 April) that Rangers are looking to close a £4.3million deal for Palma, with there being plenty of interest in the winger. If Beale did land the 23-year-old, Matondo’s time at Ibrox would surely reach its conclusion?

He was a Giovanni van Bronckhorst signing, and it’s fair to say the 2022 transfer haul was a failure. The former QPR boss needs to rebuild and he will be hoping Matondo’s age and previous transfer fee will allow Rangers to recoup some of the £3million they paid for the Welshman.

However, if they thrash out a deal for Palma, that’s another £3million down the drain at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, one player’s departure from the club is “inevitable” this summer and the Gers are set to make a solid profit.
