Rangers in line for potential £35m windfall as UEFA coefficient makes good reading for Champions League groups

Rangers will need to thank Giovanni van Bronckhorst for their Europa League run last season as it bumped them up in the UEFA coefficient standings.

They sit in 31st place on a table with all the top European sides – Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid making up the top five.

Celtic, despite finishing above Rangers for the second year in a row, have been far from impressive in Europe and are in 57th place.

Due to this, Gers will now have a very good chance of being in Pot 3 for the Champions League group stage draw with Celtic being in Pot 4.

This is crucial as the last pot usually gets the worst of draws and the Ibrox outfit found that out the hard way this season when they were paired against Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax.

Nobody expects Rangers to win the tournament or even go past the group stage, but with a favourable draw, one cannot write off a second-place finish.

More importantly for Michael Beale and the club will be the money that comes in from playing in the Champions League and picking up points in Europe.

Per Glasgow Times, £13.2million is given to each team that qualifies for the group stage which Gers should be capable of doing.

£507.3million is then to be split among the 32 clubs based on how many shares they’ve got which is contingent on the UEFA coefficient as well.

Thus, Gers’ share from that will be up to £4million and then they will also rake in close to £10million from matchday income along with broadcasting revenue.

Then there’s prize money based on results and given the fact that they’re likelier to get an easier group than last time, the chances of them getting £786,000 per point will certainly increase.

This takes the total close to the £35million mark and hopefully, the club budget accordingly and give Beale the money he needs to get them to compete with Celtic as this is a key transfer window.

In other Rangers news, the club are clearly playing a sick joke with their supporters after they made an announcement about a senior player.
