BBC pundit slams Celtic teen Jamie Meikle as he raves about Rangers sensation Jack Roberts at Hampden Park

BBC pundit Richard Foster was wowed by “fantastic” Rangers youngster Jack Roberts in the club’s Scottish Youth Cup clash with Celtic on Wednesday (3 April).

Roberts scored the opening goal of the match at Hampden Park after 19 minutes as he cooly slotted the ball past Celtic goalkeeper Jamie Meikle.

Foster was, however, disappointed with the effort from the Meikle, as well as the defending from Lenny Agbaire.

“It just comes from a hopeful ball in behind,” Foster said on BBC Scotland (07:24pm). “Agbaire there stepping out with his hand up, but he’s the one that’s playing him onside.

“Even then I think the goalkeeper can do a bit better. It’s not the sweetest of strikes but credit to Roberts, he times his run really, really well. He’s moving forward, he’s got the momentum, Agbaire stepping out and it’s a good finish in the end.

“But the goalkeeper might be a little bit disappointed. But fantastic composure, you can see his face there, very much in control of what he was doing.”

End-to-end clash

There was plenty of build-up to the big encounter between the two rivals at Hampden Park, and fans certainly weren’t disappointed as they were treated to six goals in the opening 45 minutes.

It’s a massive occasion for the youngsters, many of which are not only playing for the Scottish Youth Cup, but also for a place in their respective senior clubs.

Gers boss Michael Beale and Celtic manager Ange Postecologu were definitely taking some time out of their busy schedules to tune into the game, with several youngsters impressing on the big stage.

And Roberts certainly caught the eye at the national stadium with his well-taken goal in the opening stages of the match.

Given the fact Rangers have very little to play for, Beale may just turn to youth in the finishing stages of the Scottish Premiership in order to get a glimpse of what the future has in store.
