Kieran Wright Rangers contract extension on cards amid Ibrox U-turn
Rangers goalkeeper Kieran Wright is “likely” to sign a contract extension with the club despite currently being down the pecking order at Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.
According to Football Scotland (11 January), the 24-year-old’s future was up in the air, with a January or summer exit on the cards.
However, the Daily Record now claim (2 May) that a contract extension is now in the offing despite Michael Beale looking to perform “major” surgery on his squad.
Surprise
Wright’s contract extension will probably see him utilised as a backup option. It’s no secret that a goalkeeper is high on Beale’s agenda, with Jack Butland closing in on his move north of the border. Allan McGregor’s career is finally reaching its conclusion, which should see a new number one come the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
Butland would be an experienced and quality addition. He’s played at the highest level before and will be hoping to get his career back on track after a difficult spell at Manchester United and Crystal Palace. As for Wright, he’s been presented with an excellent opportunity. There’s a chance for the youngster to stake a claim for a place on the bench, and take advantage of any injury to Butland.

A contract being extended should be a rare occurrence during the off-season. It’s clear Beale is eager to move on a number of his underperforming players as soon as possible. With the season now done on the silverware front, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see further outgoings in the coming weeks.
