Rangers alarm bells ring louder over Todd Cantwell after ‘mindblowing’ development

Scottish Mail on Sunday columnist Gary Keown has slammed Todd Cantwell for his behaviour on social media after the Rangers star spoke out about his time at Norwich.

Cantwell, 25, has done well since joining the Gers in January but he’s posted some questionable content online since then and has recently tweeted about mistreatment at Carrow Road before he left.

Keown is concerned by the English midfielder’s activity on social media, suggesting that he should stay quiet and focus on his football.

Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 30 April [page 103], Keown said: “Yet, when Cantwell posted on social media immediately after Rangers’ Premiership defeat at Parkhead at the start of the month that ‘we lost the game – they didn’t win it’, the alarm bells started ringing.

“They only became louder when he doubled down. Then, last week, he started sticking stuff online about how his treatment at Norwich towards the end was ‘mindblowing’ and how ‘the truth will be known’ in time.

“Interacting with fans is great. However, it doesn’t have to involve suggesting Celtic didn’t win a gamer in which they were superior or giving the impression you’re planning to settle scores in public with your old club.”

Deactivate

As good as it is to see players interacting with supporters on social media, there’s a time and a place for it.

There’s also a way to go about it and Cantwell isn’t doing it right.

As a footballer, your Twitter account shouldn’t be used to put any more pressure on you than what’s necessary because Cantwell is making a rod for his own back with his tweets.

Not only is he creating drama with Norwich but he’s also opening himself up to Celtic fans with his questionable reaction to losing to them last time out.

Cantwell is a good footballer and he doesn’t need to create sideshows around his career at Rangers. He just needs to get on the pitch and play well.

But as Keown points out in his column, it’s all well and good playing well against some of the lesser teams in the Scottish Premiership but it’s games against Celtic where it counts.

So far, Cantwell hasn’t stepped up in the big games and that needs to change in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park this weekend.

In other Rangers news, an injury rumour scare has emerged ahead of the Old Firm on Sunday.
