Rangers fan groups set out joint statement of demands for chairman John Bennett

A joint statement has been issued by Rangers fan groups calling on new chairman John Bennett to ensure “accountability, competence and transparency” is delivered at Ibrox, as posted to the Rangers Supporters’ Association Twitter account.

Together with the Union Bears ultras and Club 1872, the fan shareholding vehicle, the RSA has confirmed that meetings have taken place with the agreed outreach to the Ibrox board, seeking dialogue and delivery behind the scenes.

Bennett recently assumed the position following the departure of Douglas Park who remains a significant minority shareholder in the club.

The collective message to the chairman appears to be a constructive approach over wider issues at the club, which has involved protests in the stands and general discontent from the rank and file toward cub executives.

“We would like to welcome John Bennett to his new role as chairman and express our hope that he will engage with supporters and make the required changes to ensure that his publicly articulated vision of a ‘best in class’ Rangers will become a reality,” read the statement.

“It is our shared view that there is a lot of work to be done for that to be the case.”

Fresh start

This move will be welcomed by many Rangers fans.

The ongoing protests need to have a positive outcome and with a joined up approach, a greater perspective (and pressure) from the supporters can be presented to the board, led by Bennett, who need to respond.

The chairman himself is a lifelong supporter so there will be common ground, but he must strive to deliver on previous pledges, as outlined in the statement.

Ahead of the new season, the club is approaching a critical time. Despite the financial constraints, it is unthinkable for Celtic to win another title next year which would make it 12 out of 13 years. That can’t happen.

The current board needs to show that they can bring the leadership and direction required to equip MIchael Beale to regain the Scottish crown and more importantly, to build on success which was squandered following the 2021 league victory.
