Ben Davies exit mooted as journalist shares £4m Rangers transfer latest

Rangers could recoup the £4million paid for Ben Davies by selling the defender to an English Championship club this summer, according to Football Scotland journalist Mark McDougall.

The central defender joined the Scottish side from Premier League giants Liverpool in July 2022.

He has been a regular under Michael Beale since the move, forming a strong partnership with fellow centre-back Connor Goldson.

“The former Liverpool defender only signed in the summer and while he has shown some ability alongside Connor Goldson, it’s not quite worked out as well as Rangers would have hoped for the money paid for him,” McDougall wrote for Football Scotland.

“Davies missed the early part of the season through injury but has been a regular in the team since. His mistake at Celtic Park when he made a poor attempt at heading the ball and gave it straight to Jota turned some supporters against him but his heading ability has been questioned on more than one occasion this season.

“At 27, he’s not quite lived up to the £4million transfer fee and Rangers could recoup that cash by finding a buyer in the English Championship again. He’s spent most of his career at that level and wouldn’t find it hard to find someone who wants him there, but Rangers will want to get the majority, if not all, of that cash back if they were to sell him but it is an option if Beale wants to improve his spending power.”

One to keep

Davies’s Rangers career certainly shouldn’t be judged on a mistake made against Celtic, not least because it came against the high-flying and very talented attacking line of the league leaders.

Moreover, the central defender has enjoyed a very solid first campaign for the Gers since his move from Liverpool, a feat made more impressive by the fact he didn’t get any minutes on the pitch during his time with the Reds.

He even had an injury in his early stages at Ibrox, with Davies having been a regular since then, with the defender among the top end of those with the most minutes at Rangers this season.

There will be a major shakeup at Ibrox this summer, but keeping hold of important senior players should be a priority, especially a committed player like Davies.

Gers boss Beale can definitely look to other player exits for some much-needed cash to finance incomings.
