Rangers: ‘Unbelievable’ James Tavernier development stuns Richard Gough amid Ibrox guarantee

Richard Gough was full of praise for James Tavernier after the Rangers captain reached a landmark 100 goals for the Light Blues.

The 31-year-old’s brace against Celtic on 8 April saw him reach the milestone on his 394th game for the Scottish Premiership giants.

Gough believes it’s an “unbelievable” achievement but admitted the full-back would probably trade his goal tally for more silverware at Ibrox.

Rangers

“I look at Tavernier playing as a full-back and scoring more than 100 goals for the club. That’s unbelievable – an incredible achievement,” said Gough (Daily Record, 18 April).

“But he’s only managed to get a couple of trophies. I would guarantee he’d rather have 10 trophies in his pocket than 100 goals. That’s what you’re remembered for.”

Still time

There is still time for Tavernier to add to his trophy haul at Ibrox. Michael Beale’s arrival, coupled with Douglas Park and Ross Wilson’s departure means change is certainly afoot at Rangers. He’s still only in his early 30s and will be looking to continue playing right through to his contract expiring in 2026.

It does feel like this summer could be a massive one for the Gers moving forward. There are a number of players out of contract and that could lead to a rather large turnover. A big summer is needed. Celtic have been relentless in the Scottish Premiership and continually improving with each passing transfer window.

Rangers

There’s already a considerable gap between the two teams and unless the Light Blues recruit smart in the off-season, they will be looking at another trophyless campaign. Of course, there is still one more piece of silverware on the line.

The Scottish Cup semi-final looks like a make-or-break moment in the season, with Rangers presented with the chance to ruin what would be a famous treble for The Hoops.

In other Rangers news, the Gers want to sign a Ligue 1 winger this summer and he has suggested he could be headed for a summer move.
