Joey Barton destroys Rangers as SPFL revenge verdict dropped

Joey Barton has unloaded both barrels on Rangers after he opened up on his dreadful five-month spell at the Scottish Premiership giants.

Barton, who is now manager at League One side Bristol Rovers, made just eight appearances for the Light Blues under Mark Warburton.

The former Newcastle midfielder has since spoken out on his time at Ibrox and has claimed he will return to Scotland to “ram it down the Old Firm’s throats”.

“Every time I read a Scottish paper it’s a case of ‘Flop Barton’. It’s the only blot on my copybook as a player,” he told the Scottish Sun (17 April).

“Maybe there’s only one thing for it and that means I’ll have to go back to Scotland and take charge of Hibs, Aberdeen or Hearts — and ram it down the Old Firm’s throats.

“But if the powers-that-be had got rid of Warburton and stuck by me, they would have won their 55th title a lot sooner than they did under Steven Gerrard. But Rangers made a bed for themselves with Warburton and they had to lie in it.”

Who?

Unfortunately for Barton, most Rangers fans won’t lose any sleep over this one. His time at Ibrox was one to forget and the 40-year-old’s claims are fairly fanciful.

If he did get the chance for revenge, then he could well be left looking rather silly after his latest comments and it wouldn’t have been the first time in his career. For now, Barton should probably focus on his managerial commitments in Bristol.

His side have hardly been impressive during the 2022/23 season, despite some bold claims from the boss at the start of the campaign. His comments put pressure on himself and his players, and, most of the time, they backfire.

As for his take on Rangers’ 55th title, it’s yet more drivel to come out of his mouth. He was hardly a world-class footballer and his failure to make an impact at Ibrox displays this perfectly.

Delusional is the best way to some up the outspoken and controversial Bristol Rovers boss.

In other Rangers news, the Gers want to sign a Ligue 1 winger this summer and he has suggested he could be headed for a summer move.
