David Weir could be perfect Rangers replacement for Ross Wilson at Ibrox
Former Rangers captain David Weir was previously described as having “excellent credentials” by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom, amid his links to the vacant sporting director role at Ibrox.
The three-time Scottish title winner and one-time assistant to Mark Warburton has been in a similar role at Brighton and Hove Albion since May last year, when he received a glowing recommendation upon his promotion.
With his obvious relationship to Rangers, Weir was mentioned as a potential contender to be Ross Wilson’s successor, as was Craig Moore whilst Christian Nerlinger is said to have declined any interest in the job.

With the remit and responsibilities outlined below by Bloom, it is clear to see what he would bring back to Ibrox if such a move materialised, especially after the strides Brighton have taken in recent years under Graham Potter and now, Roberto De Zerbi.
“David’s credentials are very strong, as he has shown in the various roles he has held with us,” he said.
“In that time he has already further enhanced an already excellent working relationship with both Paul Barber (chief executive) and me, as well as our executive team responsible for the running of the club.
“David will oversee all football operations; including recruitment, analysis, medical and player welfare, across both the men’s and women’s set-up.”

Interest and desire
Given his position as technical director at the Amex Stadium, within a thriving Premier League club, it would take a very strong offer to prise him back to Scotland.
There would also be the obstacle of finances, with his wage in Sussex likely to be way in excess of what would be available at Ibrox.
Overall, it will come down to if Weir really wants the job or not, if an approach was to be made. Does he have the interest and desire required for what is a higher profile role, compared to his present employment?
All of that remains to be seen but it is understood that the club hall of fame inductee does have positive relations with the directors at Ibrox, despite the cloud that he left under in 2017 [BBC] following the lead of Warburton.
Rangers are set to see out the season before making a new appointment ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, but this move could be perfect for the club.
