Gary Keown slams John Bennett amid Rangers controversy as ‘civil war’ verdict shared

The Scottish Daily Mail’s Gary Keown has slammed John Bennett with the Rangers chairman yet to break his silence since replacing Douglas Park at Ibrox.

Park suddenly stood down on 4 April and was replaced by Bennett, yet the former vice-chairman has remained extremely tight-lipped since taking the role.

Writing in his latest column for the Scottish Daily Mail (pg 100, 16 April), Keown has suggested that “civil war” isn’t the backdrop in which a positive future could be built and has called on Bennett to come out of hiding.

He wrote: “He surely can’t hide away like Park did? He certainly can’t keep running the place in the same way. He needs to be open to questions, as of this moment, there’s an obvious one to start with. Where are you?”

Spot on

The silence from Ibrox is deafening. Why on earth has Bennett stepped up and still not said anything? He should’ve been actively trying to build bridges with an already divided fanbase as soon as he was named chairman. Now there’s more uncertainty on whether adequate change will actually take place.

He was part of the furniture under Park, so will this regime just be a continuation of the last? Fans will certainly hope that isn’t the case. The departure of Ross Wilson wasn’t Rangers’ doing.

Nottingham Forest instigated the move and the under-fire sporting director was more than happy to jump ship after an eventful three and a half years in charge of the club.

Let’s hope the chairman is working hard behind the scenes. This summer is pivotal moving forward and it’s essential the board support Michael Beale. The Rangers boss has a clear idea of what he wants to add to his squad, and if he’s allowed to do so, the future should be bright.
