Chris Jack reacts to developments at Ibrox as Rangers win v St Mirren

Chris Jack has reacted to surprise events at Ibrox on Saturday 15 April as Rangers beat St Mirren 5-2, in his match report for The Herald.

Rangers prevailed in the end to secure a deserved win over St Mirren, but the way the visitors came from behind twice, threatened to put a surprise spin on the Premiership clash.

Michael Beale’s team left it late with three goals in six minutes in the final stages applying gloss to a result that was in doubt for long enough.

It was known that changes would be made to the Gers line-up on Saturday, but Jack rightly touched on the unpredictable nature of an eventful afternoon in Govan.

“This wasn’t how many would have expected the afternoon to unfold,” he wrote.

“The final result of a home win was no surprise, but the way in which Rangers got over the line could not have been predicted before a ball was kicked.

“The side was as expected, and perhaps as feared for some supporters.

“Beale was once again limited in terms of his options due to injuries, but a couple of those on the bench would have been hoping that this would have been their afternoon to get a chance to impress.”

Old and new

The most impressive aspect of the match for Rangers would have been the clinical way in which the outcome was put beyond doubt. It was that six-minute onslaught late on, in which Alfredo Morelos’ double was complimented by Scott Arfield’s strike.

So often a missing quality but today, a ruthless edge emerged for Beale’s side when it was badly needed.

Across the team, there were highs and lows in terms of individual displays. Ben Davies was underwhelming again, whilst John Souttar showed his ability to carry the ball out of defence.

John Lundstram was praised by the manager but questions remain if he is to have a future in Glasgow. Another who won’t for very different reasons was Scott Arfield. If only the club could sign a 27-year-old clone of the former Burnley man.

It was Todd Cantwell who stole the show, with an excellent second-half impact. There is so much more to come from the attacker but his quality is evident. Just how far he will go at Ibrox, is up to him.
