Rangers player ratings v St Mirren: Alfredo Morelos, Todd Cantwell shine, Ben Davies flops

Rangers left it late but ended up picking up the three points at Ibrox when they beat St Mirren by a 5-2 scoreline on Saturday, 15 April.

Todd Cantwell and Fashion Sakala scored a goal each and the game was deadlocked at 2-2 in the 65th minute.

Alfredo Morelos stepped on late to bag a couple of goals to put some daylight between the hosts and visitors and Scott Arfield later capped off a brilliant cameo to get the three points.

Rangers

Here are our player ratings:

Allan McGregor – 5

It’s hard to blame the goalkeeper when the defence ahead of him has been shambolic. It can be argued he could’ve done better to marshal the players in front of him but this cannot be blamed on him.

James Tavernier – 5

Missed a penalty in the first half and did enough to redeem himself with an assist for the opener but it still wasn’t the most impressive of performances from the captain.

John Souttar – 3

Played a major role in the concession of the second goal from the corner and it was just a disastrous centre-back pairing waiting for a calamity to happen. Since moving to Ibrox, he’s done little to show why he merits being at the club.

Ben Davies – 3

Made a number of errors throughout the game and was undoubtedly the worst Rangers defender on the pitch. Never looked confident in possession and cost his team dearly on Saturday was it not for another Rangers goal. Nowhere as good without Connor Goldson.

Rangers

Borna Barisic – 6

Did well going forward and put in some dangerous crosses that surprised the St Mirren defenders. His free kick for Sakala’s free kick was inch perfect. Defensively he’s still not the best, but performances like this are something Beale will take from him.

John Lundstram – 5

Struggled all game and it was a massive surprise that he wasn’t taken off before Nicolas Raskin as he clearly wasn’t feeling it out there at Ibrox. Lost possession on seven occasions and really struggled to make an impression in midfield.

Nicolas Raskin – 7

Boasted a pass accuracy of 94 per cent as he anchored the midfield to near perfection. The January signings have really worked and he’s certainly hit the ground running at Ibrox. Having him in midfield certainly will have reassured the Rangers attacker to create havoc in the final third.

Malik Tillman – 6

Lost all his aerial duels as he struggled to make things happen for the hosts. Even on the ground, he could only 50 per cent of them and it wasn’t a performance that Beale would be too impressed about. Was rightly booted off by the 77th minute.

Todd Cantwell – 8

Scored one and assisted two others and was undoubtedly one of the best players in the game. Without him, Gers would not be winning the game and what a signing he’s been for Beale’s side. He boasted a pass accuracy of 90 per cent too and this was a performance he’d remember for a while.

Rangers

Fashion Sakala – 6

Scored a goal and on another day would’ve grabbed a couple of more as he’s had better games for Rangers. Did not complete either of his attempted crosses and lost possession on 14 occasions. He certainly will take the positives from this one but will look to work on certain areas as well.

Alfredo Morelos – 9

The Colombian was lethal in front of goal – much to the relief of Beale who desperately would not want to drop points at home. On a day where few things went right for the hosts, Morelos’ awareness and ability to find the back of the net was clearly on point. Scored two crucial late goals to win his side the game.

Subs

Rabbi Matondo – 5

Scott Arfield – 6.5

Glen Kamara – 4

Ianis Hagi – 4

In other Rangers news, the club may now approach a sporting director who built a Champions League winning team and can hire him for free.
