Rangers news: Todd Cantwell reacts to Celtic reports since Old Firm

Rangers playmaker Todd Cantwell has spoken out on social media following reports he made a “jibe” against Celtic following the 3-2 Old Firm defeat on Saturday (8 April).

Football Scotland shared a Tweet on Sunday (9 April) about Cantwell’s comments after the defeat at Parkhead, in which the 25-year-old said: “We lost the game, they [Celtic] didn’t win it”.

The defeat to Ange Postecolgou’s Celtic side was Michael Beale’s first Scottish Premiership loss since taking the reins from Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox last November.

Taking to his personal Twitter account on Monday morning, Cantwell reacted to the article by saying he made “no jibe” and that he always respected his opponents on the football field.

He wrote: “No jibe at all, always respect your opponents.”

Controversial

After a comprehensive defeat in the Viaplay Cup final to Celtic, Rangers came back into this Old Firm encounter with revenge on their minds.

The Gers were much improved from the lacklustre performance at Hampden Park in February, taking the game to Celtic from the very first whistle, and extremely unlucky not to take the lead through Alfredo Morelos’ goal, which was later disallowed for a foul.

However, after this moment of luck for the Hoops, it always felt like the league leaders would flex their muscles and come out eventual victors.

In the heat of the moment, Cantwell might have said that Celtic didn’t win the game, but he is unlikely to have meant it as a jibe towards the club’s fierce rivals.

Coming out on social media in such a manner is a classy move and shows that he regrets any controversial comments made post-match.

The ex-Canaries ace should now have his eyes firmly set on the Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Celtic at the end of April in an attempt to exact some much-needed revenge.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have made an official approach for a new striker transfer.
