Decision to be made by Rangers and Celtic boards as European Super League windfall on line – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...
Dan Plumley has insisted that with a “significant” windfall on the line, if Rangers join the new European Super League, there is a big decision to make in the boardroom.
It has been reported by the Daily Mail that Rangers and Celtic could rake in a “huge” amount more than £30million from the new plans, after one failed attempt to launch the competition.
The finance expert believes it will leave the hierarchy at Ibrox with a decision based on finances or emotion given what the fans may think of the decision.

“It gives clubs a decision to make,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.
“Every club we have spoken about in a Super League proposal has had that decision to make and you are weighing up the finances versus the emotional side of it.
“Again, there is a lot at stake there, let’s be honest, given the overall finances of Scottish football, it doesn’t generate the amount of money other leagues in Europe do through broadcasting so the club revenue position is lower than some of their rivals.
“So, does taking part in the Super League help Celtic and Rangers financially? If it those kinds of numbers, yes, probably, because they’re only guaranteed that amount of money if they qualify for the Champions League group stages which is not a given.
“It does give you a financial decision to make, of course, the other side of that is how does it play out with the fan base? We’ve not kind of seen that rhetoric come out of Scotland as it wasn’t on the agenda so that is an unknown at this point.

“You can certainly see where the carrot is there, it is a significant amount of money and they are two clubs who command a fan base around the world. It gives them a decision to make and for me, I’ve always said a Super League will come back around and one will happen.
“A significant windfall like that gives you a difficult financial decision to make cause you’re battling with the emotive side of it.”
With a new-look board already round the table at Ibrox, it may not be long until they are left with a huge decision.
In other Rangers news, the club are in line for a multi-million windfall from the Premier League after a £10m Auchenhowie milestone was reached.
