David Tanner slams Rangers ‘conspiracy theorists’ after VAR call in 2-0 Scottish Premiership win v Dundee United
David Tanner has slammed “conspiracy theorists” after Rangers were not awarded a penalty during their 2-0 Scottish Premiership win over Dundee United.
A Malik Tillman double saw Michael Beale’s side make it ten league victories in a row and keep the pressure on Celtic at the top of the table.
There has been talk in recent weeks over the use of VAR in Scotland and Celtic legend, Frank McAvennie (Football Insider, 28 March), was left stunned by the fact that Rangers haven’t given away a penalty in the league during the 2022/23 season.
TalkSPORT journalist Tanner has since responded after the Gers weren’t awarded a penalty for a possible handball on Saturday (1 April).
“No penalty to Rangers,” he wrote (personal Twitter, 1 April).
“How do the conspiracy theorists fit that into their narrative?”
Ridiculous
It’s ridiculous to suggest there’s some sort of conspiracy afoot.
Rangers didn’t give a penalty away before the introduction of VAR and they haven’t since. It’s got nothing to do with an agenda against Celtic. If anything, it’s an impressive feat from Beale’s side.
VAR as a whole has caused a stir in Scotland. The concept of video officiating is to eventually come to the right decision and it feels as if mistakes are still being made from time to time. Overall the standard of refereeing needs to improve and it’s something the authorities must look at.

In the upcoming fixtures against Celtic, the use of VAR will be under the microscope. There’s yet to be a big call overturned in an Old Firm fixture and the backlash could be severe if the wrong decision is made. For Beale and Rangers, they will be looking to lay down a maker when they travel to Parkhead on Saturday (8 April).
