Rangers may be forced to make tough decision with Steven Davis this summer after injury news breaks

Rangers may be forced to sever ties with Steven Davis given his injury situation and the fact that his deal runs out in the summer.

The 38-year-old has enjoyed two four-year stints at Ibrox and is loved by the fans, staff and everyone associated with the club.

However, at that age, to undergo a double ACL tear [Sky Sports] may be brutal but the club may put their interests first and opt to get him off their payroll.

While they could give him a one year deal, injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar claims [26 March] that there’s a possibility he’s not the same player again and there’s a remote chance of him not having a professional career after it.

He said, “The best outcome is that he’s ready to return in August or September and has minimal knock-on effects.

“On the other hand, the worst possible outcome is that he’s unable to return at all and has to call it a career.

“There’s always a chance of not being the same player after an ACL reconstruction, particularly at his age with all the cumulative effects from years of playing.

“One positive is he does have previous experience navigating a long-term injury which always helps the process, especially mentally.“

If Rangers are to go to the next level and challenge Celtic for the title next season, it’s going to have to be a summer of change.

That means that Michael Beale and the Gers board will have to be pragmatic over thinking with their heart and making some tough calls.

Bidding farewell to Davis is certainly going to be one of those, especially if he says that he still has a year or two left in his legs.

What the club eventually ends up doing, remains to be seen, but it’s not something they can decide overnight and it will take some thinking.
