Angus Gunn to head to Ibrox - Three players who could replace Allan McGregor at Rangers

Michael Beale will have one eye firmly fixed on the summer transfer window – and Rangers’ boss will have one position near the top of his wishlist.

With Allan McGregor set to finally call it a day at the end of the 2022/23 season, the need for a new goalkeeper is of paramount importance. There will be some who advocate for Jon McLaughlin to be given a chance to impress, but the 35-year-old hasn’t done enough to be the Light Blues’ number one.

Despite being contracted to the club until the summer of 2024, there’s a strong chance the former Sunderland shot-stopper moves on in the summer; a decision which would be hard to argue with.

With potentially two goalkeeping exits on the cards, here Ibrox News takes a look at three realistic targets the board and Beale could target in the summer.

Angus Gunn

The US Sun (12 February) claim that Angus Gunn is a target for Beale. The Scotland international is currently in and out of the Norwich side and it’s understood the 27-year-old is valued at around £3million.

Gunn has been called up to Scotland’s international squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers. He’s been in and out of David Wagner’s plans at Carrow Road but recently produced a “brilliant” performance to earn the Canaries a point against Stoke City (BBC Sport, 18 March).

This is a move which would make a lot of sense.

James Trafford

A younger option for the Gers to look into is Manchester City youngster James Trafford. The 20-year-old has been a standout performer for Bolton Wanderers of late and was link with Rangers during the January window. The Mail report (30 December) the Light Blues were eying Trafford as a younger alternative to McGregor.

Considering his age, he would certainly be a long-term asset if he did make the move north of the border.

Freddie Woodman

According to the Scottish Sun (2 March), Rangers have sent scouts to watch Freddie Woodman this season and the 25-year-old would be an exceptional pickup if a deal can be thrashed out.

He’s been in sensational form for the Championship club this season and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he moves on to better things. 16 clean sheets in the 2022/23 season is an incredible record from the former Newcastle man.
