Todd Cantwell branded Rangers disgrace after cheating incident, pundit fires back at former SFA official

We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox

Tam McManus has rubbished claims Todd Cantwell “cheated” to get Callum Slattery sent off as Rangers beat Motherwell 4-2 at the weekend.

Slattery was shown a straight red card in the 76th minute at Fir Park when a flailing arm caught Cantwell, who proceeded to hit the deck in a dramatic fashion.

Speaking on the Get Involved Referees Podcast on 21 March, former referee Steve Conroy claimed Cantwell conned Nick Walsh into sending Slattery off, saying the Rangers midfielder’s actions were “disgusting” and “disgraceful”.

McManus feels Cantwell did make the most of the contact from Slattery but he can understand why the English playmaker did what he did.

“That was disappointing,” McManus told Ibrox News.

Listen, he was definitely caught by a flailing arm.

I think he made a meal of it and that’s obviously contributed to Slattery being sent off.

It’s disappointing to see that.

You wanted him to just get up and get on with the game but that’s part and parcel of football now.

If you get caught and can take advantage to get someone sent off then you’re going to take it.

I wouldn’t call him a cheat. I don’t think he’s cheated anyone but I think he’ll be disappointed when he looks back at it because it wasn’t a hard whack to the face.”

Cantwell scored his first goal for the Light Blues in the 4-2 win at Fir Park on 18 March.

He’s made 10 appearances for the club since his January arrival from Norwich.

In other Rangers news, this Ibrox coach is being tipped to leave Govan for a “big club in England” as managerial speculation emerges south of the border.
