Rangers ace Ianis Hagi wanted by Borussia Monchengladbach, scouts to follow winger with interest made clear

Borussia Monchengladbach have made their interest in Rangers attacker Ianis Hagi known and are now set to scout him in the coming weeks, Pro Sport reports.

The Romanian wide man is at the centre of a furious war of words between his national team coach Edi Iordanescu and his father Gheorghe, the manager of table-toppers Farul in his homeland, over his lack of a call-up to the most recent squad.

Despite only recently returning from over a year out of action due to knee surgery Hagi junior is reportedly now in demand across Europe, which has emerged as the reason behind the angry response of his famous father to the Romania snub, and German side Monchengladbach are now taking action.

Sources told Pro Sport in the 24-year-old’s home country: “Now Ianis has a new opportunity on the horizon. Those from Borussia Monchengladbach have expressed their interest, through intermediaries, and the scouts of the Bundesliga club will follow him in the coming period.”

Hagi scored in the 1-1 draw at Aberdeen on 18 January last season, then sustained a serious injury against Stirling Albion three days later in the Scottish Cup and wasn’t seen again in Light Blues colours until 28 January this year as a late substitute against St Johnstone.

Ball rolling

It looks like the things are getting moving ahead of a possible run on Hagi in the summer window, but it will surely need to be a substantial offer to tempt the club into selling as they only gave the winger a contract extension on 15 December ahead of his return to action.

In many ways he was the exact player who appeared to be missing opposite Ryan Kent for much of the Giovanni van Bronckhorst era, and his absence shouldn’t be overlooked in terms of the relative struggles at Ibrox domestically in the past year.

He is sure to get more opportunities to get back to full fitness over the remaining league games since the title race looks to be over, and Michael Beale may have an eye on him becoming a key man again for next season.

But with few obvious options for generating transfer income this summer, although there are a few, perhaps the Rangers manager would be willing to sacrifice Hagi for the right price.

It appears evident that his father has an eye on getting him a move sooner rather than later judging by his intervention over the lack of a national team call up.

He may be jumping the gun though, as both Beale and Iordanescu appear to be playing the long game with regards to bringing the former Genk man back after so long out.

In other Rangers news, one Ibrox ace received scathing criticism from a BBC Sport pundit who insisted he was putting his ties to the opposite to one side.
