Rangers on brink, ‘just waiting’ for fans to explode amid Celtic tension

Alan Rough believes Rangers are on the brink of “exploding” after the travelling support protested against Stewart Robertson and Ross Wilson.

The away end at Fir Park displayed banners demanding change at the club, which was clearly visible on Sky Sports’ coverage of the Light Blues’ 4-2 win over Motherwell (18 March).

Rough has since reacted and has suggested one Scottish Premiership defeat could see the club fall into complete turmoil.

Rangers

“It just adds more pressure on the game [against Celtic] and for Rangers. I think they’re one defeat from it really exploding, from the fans exploding,” said Rough (PLZ Football Show, 13m 35s, 20 March).

“The fans have their own reasons for protesting whether you like it or not. But a defeat of any magnitude, in the league or Celtic beating them, then it will just explode.

“That’s not what you want, you want everyone going in the right direction. The tension is there, we are just waiting for it to happen.”

Pressure on

There is pressure on Michael Beale when, realistically, there shouldn’t be. Rangers have improved dramatically under the former QPR boss and he’s registered a near perfect record in the league.

Unfortunately for Beale, the club is judged on trophies and failure to land a piece of silverware is unthinkable.

Wilson and Robertson are the ones the fans will vent their frustrations at, but there’s now pressure from the Ibrox hierarchy on the Rangers boss. If he can mastermind a Scottish Cup win, questions over the board’s tenure at the club could lessen.

The significance of the semi-final tie against The Hoops cannot be understated. Defeat will hand Celtic the chance to complete a treble – a scenario which cannot be contemplated.

The Ibrox faithul will be hopeful of Beale’s ability to learn from his mistakes and put out a side which can match their fierce rivals, particularly in midfield.

All eyes are now firmly fixed on the end of April, with the Gers’ season hanging by a thread.

In other Rangers news, the board should now be feeling the pressure after images emerge from stands in 4-2 win over Motherwell.
