Jeff Stelling reacts to incredible Rangers footage of James Tavernier v Motherwell live on Sky Sports

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling was left stunned as James Tavernier smashed home a free-kick to get Rangers back into the game against Motherwell.

With the Light Blues looking to extend their unbeaten Scottish Premiership run under Michael Beale, Tavernier provided the inspiration after they fell behind early in the first half.

Stelling was wowed as the right-back made it 98 goals for the club with the strike, as they went on to collect the three points in a 4-2 victory at Fir Park.

“Talking about a break, Rangers need one,” Stelling said live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday after the goal was shown [12:55].

“They’ve got one, Tavernier, incredibly he has scored 98 goals now.”

Incredible record

It is indeed an incredible record for Tavernier especially considering his position as a right-back. Certainly, the defender’s goals come from penalties and free-kicks but it shows that the Ibrox veteran has mastered his art and is able to deliver at crucial moments when the Gers need it most.

And his free-kick against Motherwell at Fir Park was just yet another example of Tavernier’s class and quality, dragging the Gers level from a stunningly taken free-kick right into the bottom corner.

In all fairness, Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly handed Tavernier so much room in the goal to pick his spot but the full-back executed it brilliantly, taking it perfectly over the wall and into the net. What a player he is, and his longevity and continued brilliance for the club instantly make him an Ibrox legend.

The one player Beale can rely upon to consistently come up with the goods when his team desperately needs it. He’ll again be a crucial player as the Gers face a testing end to the campaign.
