Steven Gerrard could be offered role, pays less than he was earning at Rangers
Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could be offered the England Under-21 manager role with Lee Carsley set to consider his future this summer, according to The Telegraph.
Gerrard was sacked by Aston Villa in October with the club one place outside the relegation zone at the time, having previously won the Scottish Premiership in charge of Rangers in 2021.
The Telegraph [14 March] claim that the prospect of hiring Gerrard or Frank Lampard in the event of Carsley leaving his post could appeal to the FA.

However, the Liverpool legend will have to “accept a salary far lower than the ones paid by their previous clubs” if he does agree to become Carsley’s successor this summer, according to the report.
Appealing move
When Gerrard made the move to manager Aston Villa in the Premier League in November 2021, many felt it was indeed the ideal next step in his short managerial career having won the Scottish Premiership with the Gers the same year.
However, things did not go according to plan for the Liverpool legend with the Villans staring down the barrel of relegation before his sacking.

The sacking certainly will have affected Gerrard’sconfidence and tarnished his reputation as one of the best up-and-coming coaches in the land.
However, the England Under-21 role could be the ideal step to rebuild his managerial career, working with some of the country’s most exciting youngsters and building a side capable of competing for youth trophies.
Gerrard knows what it takes to win having done so with Rangers, but in order to regain his reputation working at international level with the England youths may be the best step for him. Whether he takes the job this summer, is another matter entirely, especially with the smaller wage package than his previous jobs offered.
He may feel he needs to continue and rebuild at club level, with his former assistant Michael Beale impressing in his old job.
