Rangers could sleepwalk into £12m loss in 2024 amid Ibrox contract failures

Much has been made of Rangers’ attempts to tie down Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to new deals at Ibrox. However, at present, both players look likely to depart in the summer.

There’s been talk of contract discussions taking place but nothing is yet to materialise. What is evident, is that the club are at risk of losing two of its biggest assets for nothing in just a matter of months.

Both players should have been sold by Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the summer of 2022. The duo could have generated a decent sum of money, which could have then been reinvested into the squad. It was a mistake and it’s one the club should have learnt from.

The board could find themselves in a very similar situation in the summer of 2024. Borna Barisic and John Lundstram are both out of contract next year. The duo arrived for free and could well depart the club for nothing when their deals conclude.

The Daily Record suggest (14 March) Lundstram had a market value of £10million when he made the move from Sheffield United in 2021. It’s also understood Rangers turned down a bid of £2million from Watford for Barisic in 2022 (Daily Record, 14 March). At one point, the duo were worth around £12million to the club.

Both players are clearly not worth that now due to their age, but with there being a realistic possibility of them leaving for free, it’s yet more poor planning from the board.

When we look across Glasgow, Celtic are working in a way where they’re developing players and looking to sell them on. This money is then invested back into the squad. It’s something which has happened at Ibrox, but nowhere near enough.

Ross Wilson and the board need to start looking ahead when it comes to the club’s out-of-contract players, because, once again, Rangers could be set to miss out on another significant sum.

In other Rangers news, the club are in line for a multi-million windfall from the Premier League after a £10m Auchenhowie milestone was reached.
