Pundit reacts as The Athletic bin Rangers coverage

We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox

Tam McManus can see why The Athletic have a plan in place to stop coverage in Rangers due to their difficulties dealing with Celtic.

In an article earlier this week (7 March), The Athletic confirmed that Jordan Campbell is starting a new full-time role within the company in the summer and there’ll be no dedicated replacement to report on the Gers.

The Athletic say they “feel it is unfair to cover only one of the Old Firm clubs” with Celtic not allowing them to attend press conferences or matches.

Although the decision has caused anger among the Gers fans who subscribe to The Athletic, McManus feels it’s the right decision because you cannot just cover one of the Old Firm sides.

“It’s the tribalism up here,” McManus told Ibrox News.

If you’re reporting the news, you have to report on both Rangers and Celtic.

I don’t know about the ins and outs of Celtic’s relationship with The Athletic but Celtic clearly aren’t happy about something, meaning The Athletic aren’t allowed back into press conferences.

I can understand why they would drop Rangers as well just because it can start to look very one-sided if you’re reporting on one and not the other.

It’s a shame but Rangers and Celtic seem to be funny about that now.

They seem to be more sensitive to the media and they maybe wanted more of it to be in-house so they can control it more.

But listen, people are always going to have opinions and The Athletic are a big company.

But I’d understand why they’d pull that because you have to cover both fairly.”

The Athletic did a different article on their Celtic coverage on Tuesday, saying: “It’s not been an easy decision but we have decided to no longer have a dedicated correspondent for Celtic.”

They added that there have been issues getting media access at Parkhead, which seems to have swayed their decision on their cancellation of Rangers coverage.

In other Rangers news, more issues could emerge in the Ibrox boardroom over a cash injection.
