Rangers: Ianis Hagi in perfect position for chance at redemption from Michael Beale vs Raith Rovers

Rangers are still aiming to retain the Scottish Cup when they take on Raith Rovers in the quarter-finals of the competition on Sunday [12 March], and Michael Beale must hand Ianis Hagi another chance to impress.

The Gers have been in strong form since Beale’s appointment in November, winning 15 of their 17 games while suffering just one defeat in the League Cup final against their Old Firm rivals Celtic – and the Scottish Cup remains the Light Blues’ most realistic chance of silverware this season.

With Rangers facing off against Scottish Championship opposition, Beale may be tempted to provide starting opportunities for some of his fringe players, and Hagi should be one of the first names on the team sheet.

The talented midfielder suffered a serious knee injury in the same competition in January 2022 against Stirling Albion, keeping him out of the team for a year.

The 24-year-old has recently returned from a long injury lay-off, and he recalls that year out as a “low period” in his career.

He made his first appearance since the injury against St Johnstone on 28 January followed by a start their 3-2 win over Partick Thistle on 12 February before being withdrawn at halftime.

With the Romanian international seeking some much-needed game time, match rhythm and a confidence boost, Raith Rovers presents Beale with the ideal opportunity of handing the Gers star a clear path for redemption.

Before his injury early last year, Hagi established himself as one of the club’s best and key performers.

During their title-winning campaign, the playmaker registered 18 goal contributions (seven goals and 11 assists) while creating six big chances and making one key pass per game.

The 24-year-old is an excellent and incredibly gifted footballer when fit and firing, and could still propel himself to become a vital figure under Beale moving forward.

The Gers are set for a huge rebuild this summer, with plenty of change set to take place in the former QPR manager’s squad. Hagi will be hoping he can once again prove his worth to the club, and there may not be a better opportunity than against Raith Rovers on Sunday.
