Eric Wynalda hints at Malik Tillman Rangers exit as Bayern Munich ‘drama’ could see him return

Malik Tillman could end up returning to Bayern Munich from Rangers in the summer with “drama” in Germany potentially opening up a spot for him in the team.

Tillman has been excellent on a season-long loan for Rangers this season and the club have a £6.2m option to make it permanent should they wish, but it would require the 20-year-old to agree a permanent contract.

Bayern also have an option to buy him back should they trigger that clause, and former USMNT legend Eric Wynalda told the Wondergoal podcast (9 March) that the player has a big decision to make as Bayern never wanted to lose him.

“Malik Tillman has some big decisions to make,” he said.

“The main reason why Bayern might be asking for his services would be the drama unfolding with Gnabry and Sane, who are also experiencing their own should I stay or should I go situation.

“The point of the loan was never that Bayern didn’t want him. It was more that they didn’t need him when they decided to loan him out.

“His performances at Rangers have been very good and Bayern have been keeping a close eye on his progress.

“At the time of the original loan Rangers was really the only landing spot that made sense. Because he has truly proven himself now there are multiple teams that would take a very serious look at him on a permanent move. His price tag has certainly gone up.”

Must keep

Tillman has been a fantastic acquisition at Ibrox and could go down as one of the best things that Giovanni van Bronckhorst ever did for this club.

His nine goals and five assists so far this season have been hugely influential, but he’s hugely improved as a player too and £6.2m has now become a bargain of a price.

Obviously there is very little Rangers can do if Bayern Munich decide to trigger their buy-back option immediately too to take Tillman off us, but he would have to agree to the move and we can try our very best to convince him that Ibrox is the right place to be.

His development won’t stagnate here because he would be a regular player, with European football and titles to be won, and he would have to work to keep his shirt under Michael Beale.

The club must do all they can to keep him next season and beyond, because we’re a far better team with him in it than when he isn’t.
