Connor Goldson struggles to 5/10, Fashion Sakala MOTM with 9/10 – Rangers player ratings v Hibernian
Rangers powered to a dominant 4-1 win over Hibernian at Easter Road in one of the best showings of the Michael Beale era on Wednesday (8 March).
The Gers fell behind early after a well worked free-kick ended with Connor Goldson putting into his own net, before Ryan Kent was fouled in the box minutes later allowing James Tavernier to equalise from the penalty spot.
Antonio Colak then gave Rangers the lead with a fine finish after Fashion Sakala broke away down the left, after missed chances by Kent and Borna Barisic. The light blues went into the break ahead, but should have found the net several times more.
Rangers continued their strong performance with a fine finish from Sakala early in the second half to put the game beyond Hibs. Antonio Colak got a second of the night with a scuffed strike into the corner, as Rangers deservedly took home all three points.
Here’s how we rated the performance of each Rangers player at Ibrox News…
Allan McGregor – 6/10
The veteran had nothing to do all game and could do nothing about the goal conceded. Distribution and positioning were solid, and proved that he is rightly the number one at the club.
James Tavernier – 7/10
Tav made it four goals in four games from right-back, but it was his constant running out wide that really caught the eye. Had one moment in the first-half where he out-ran the defender and put in a beautiful cross only for the chance to be missed. Back to his best tonight.
Connor Goldson – 5/10
It may seem harsh, but the only negative of the night was the own goal. Goldson went with his wrong foot in trying to clear it, and in turn the clean sheet was gone. Did well outside of that though.
Ben Davies – 6/10
A really classy performance from the ex-Liverpool man. He dealt with the threat in behind well, was great in possession and did everything that was asked of him. A very good showing.
Borna Barisic – 7/10
Barisic was a constant threat out wide with his running and his crossing, and his relationship with Antonio Colak was seen once again. Probably should have scored with a thunderous volley in the first half, but a solid showing nonetheless.
Nicolas Raskin – 7/10
Raskin continues to shine as a star in midfield with his passing and energy, but he’s also not afraid to get stuck in either and his tackling is good. He ran the show alongside Jack, and it’s no surprise this is the go-to pairing now.
Ryan Jack – 8/10
While Rangers dominated in an offensive sense in the first half in particular, Jack was the man holding the fort and starting attacks from deep with his passing and intelligence. Performances such as this one will earn him a new deal at Ibrox.
Fashion Sakala Jr – 9/10
He comes from Zambia… What a showing by Sakala Jr. A goal and two assists for the winger who constantly ran in behind with his pace and showed his quality with some really good end product. A sure-fire starter when he plays like this.
Ryan Kent – 7/10
Kent had a relatively average first-half, but he came alive in the second half with some fantastic dribbling and electric footwork. He won the penalty brilliantly, and his exchanges on the edge of the Hibs box caused problems all night. A great shift.
Todd Cantwell – 6/10
The ex-Norwich man may not have had the most spectacular showing on the night, but he was a big reason why the team ticked so well from midfield to attack. He did all the basics really well, and had glimpses of quality too with touches and dribbling to show his ability. Another strong showing.
Antonio Colak – 7/10
The Croat knows where the goal is, so it should be absolutely no surprise to anyone that he found the back of the net twice with the two chances he had in the game. His all-round play was great too as he brought the other attackers into the equation, but he did his most important job better than anything.
