Rangers funds in place for Michael Beale to sign goalkeeper he wants in summer

Rangers boss Michael Beale has now “got a budget” to go out and sign a new goalkeeper this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Gers are on the hunt for a new no.1 shot-stopper for Michael Beale, after it’s been reported that club veteran Allan McGregor will be leaving Ibrox this summer when his contract ends [Daily Record, 16 February].

The Light Blues have been linked with a number of targets in recent weeks, with Prest North End’s Freddie Woodman a £3m target and also Norwich City’s Angus Gunn a top target [The Scottish Sun, 11 February].

And Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport [7 March] believes the goalkeeping conundrum is “going to be a big one” for Rangers this summer.

He said: “The goalkeeper situation is seemingly going to be a big one for them. We know that Beale’s got a budget to go and get the keeper that he wants, and he’s got the players in mind that he’d like to give a crack at that.

“I don’t think Allan McGregor has said he’s definitely going yet, but either way, they’ve got to figure out what happens in the future here because he’s not going to carry on forever. And it’s about getting the right character in there as well as the right player.”

Desperately needed

Indeed, the goalkeeping situation is going to be a hugely decisive one for the Gers this summer as signing the right one could certainly prove the difference in their aim to topple their fierce rivals next season.

Beale has certainly got to go out and acquire a goalkeeper capable of coming in and providing his defence with the assuredness, confidence and quality to take the Gers to the next level.

Rangers

Woodman and Gunn are serious and able targets for the club to consider. Both candidates are still relatively young, with the huge capabilities to go on and become top-level goalkeepers, but the question is can they go on to become an able long-term replacement for the departing McGregor?

Being a Rangers no.1 comes with huge expectations and pressure, and Jones is incredibly right in that the club must make sure they pick the candidate with the right character and mentality to fill such big shoes at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson and Stewart Robertson have nowhere to hide now that their human shield has faltered.
