Kris Commons slams Rangers transfer activity and claims Celtic subs would walk into team

Kris Commons believes Celtic subs would walk into Michael Beale’s Rangers side right now and that the Ibrox club have, by and large, signed a “load of dross” over the past few years.

The gulf in class between the bitter Old Firm rivals was plain for all to see in the Gers’ bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat in the Viaplay Cup final, while the gap in the Scottish Premiership remains at nine points.

Writing in his column for the Scottish Daily Mail (Monday, 6 March, page 16), Commons admitted that despite picking up 34 points from a possible 36 since taking the reins at Ibrox, Beale’s squad remains streets behind Ange Postecoglou’s after years of poor recruitment.

Commons wrote: “It just highlights how stagnant things have become at Ibrox and how their recruitment model has failed with fans now making their feelings on this clear to sporting director Ross Wilson. Even Celtic’s subs would walk into this Rangers team at the moment.”

He later added: “We’ve seen it with some of the banners unveiled by fans in recent weeks. They can see how far their club is behind Celtic on and off the pitch. Recruitment is key to success in modern football, but it’s an area where Rangers have faltered badly since winning the league.

“By and large, they’ve signed a load of dross whilst also allowing key players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to run down their contracts.”

Harsh

Although Rangers have had their fair share of transfer failures over the past five years, the current crop of players are by no means a “load of dross”.

Yes, they were played off the park in the Viaplay Cup final, but the Gers were coming up against a well-oiled machine who have been at work under Postecoglou since 2021. Give Beale another year or two to place his stamp on Rangers, and the result will be much different.

The major concern for the Gers ahead of the summer transfer window are the futures of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent. With both players running out of contract at the end of the season, Beale could find himself extremely under-staffed in attacking areas before he knows it.

Sufficient replacements must be brought in if both players are to leave this summer otherwise the gap to Celtic could grow even larger. Ross Wilson and Beale are now under huge pressure to get it right and bridge the gap with their Old Firm rivals.
