Chris Sutton blasts ‘serious’ Rangers issue above Michael Beale pay grade, Alfredo Morelos involved
Chris Sutton has blasted Rangers’ transfer activity and that “serious questions” will have to be asked if they allow key stars like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent to leave on free transfers.
The Gers currently have a whopping 33 players as part of their first-team squad so far, a result of the club’s lack of strategy and planning in recruitment and their mismanagement of transfer funds.
With big stars like Kent and Morelos on expiring contracts this summer, Sutton argued Rangers can’t match Celtic’s strategy in the market as it’s not about just spending money but “spending better”.

Writing for the Daily Record, he wrote: “Postecoglou has balanced the books but he’s also barely wasted a penny. The big-money arrivals have all done the business and the bargain buys have looked like steals. Cameron Carter-Vickers might gave cost £6m but he’s been value for money, but then look at the likes of Reo Hatate, who cost less than Rabbi Matondo.
“It’s not just about spending – it’s about spending better. That is an issue higher up than Beale. I still can’t believe Rangers haven’t sorted out the futures of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos and there has to be serious questions asked if they leave for free in the summer.”
Staggering
It will be quite staggering if the Gers allow both Kent and Morelos to leave on free transfers this summer, and it shows the club board are careless in their recruitment strategy and have no clue in how to manage their players’ contracts.
Kent and Morelos have been such key figures in the Gers’ success in previous seasons, and the fact that they could both leave without a fee is totally inconceivable for the club fans.

Sutton is absolutely right, serious questions will need to be asked as to the activity taken behind the scenes at Ibrox.
If the Gers are to match Celtic’s recruitment muscle and expertise, serious changes will need to be made from those above Beale, or else their ambitions to match and topple their rivals next season will prove impossible.
33 players on the club’s books is remarkably bad management, and clearing out the squad will prove a huge task this summer. How will that affect Beale’s plans to quickly get in the players he needs for pre-season?
