Jeff Stelling and Kris Boyd debate ‘impossible’ looking Rangers title chances live on Sky Sports

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling believes it “looks impossible” for Celtic to drop enough points for Rangers to win the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Michael Beale’s side are currently sitting nine points behind their Old Firm rivals in the league despite pulling together an unbeaten run that stretches back before the New Year.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (4 March, 12:49pm), Stelling and Kris Boyd debated whether the Gers stood any chance of pulling off a miraculous title charge in the final 12 games of the season.

Stelling said: “Every Rangers fan is going to be looking at Celtic. Nine points clear. They effectively need to lose three of their last 12 and draw one, which looks impossible.

“But Celtic go to St Mirren, who are the only side to beat them so far this season in September. Could it happen again?”

Kris Boyd replied: “I would be astonished, Jeff.”

Very tough

Although Rangers have been buoyed by the arrival of Beale at Ibrox, the gap to their Scottish Premiership rivals has remained at nine points for the past few months.

For the Gers to even stand a chance of taking the title away from Ange Postecoglou’s side this season, they would have to maintain their unbeaten run and hope that Celtic choked with the finishing line in sight.

The glaring gap between the two sides was on show for all to see during the Viaplay Cup final at Hampden Park and Beale is still probably a couple of windows away from having the squad he ideally wants at Ibrox.

The likes of Alfredo Morelos and Allan McGregor look likely to depart in the summer, and their replacements will be vital in starting the new Beale era.

For now, though, it seems an almost impossible task for Beale to clinch the SPL title this season.

In other Rangers news, another contract decision must be made to avoid a repeat situation next season with this star.
