Tommy Burns would be ’embarrassed’ by what Celtic fans sung about Rangers greats on Sunday

Late Celtic icon Tommy Burns would be “embarrassed” by what Celtic fans allegedly sang about the deaths of some Rangers greats ahead of the Viaplay Cup final on Sunday, according to The Herald journalist Graeme McGarry.

It is believed that before the two fierce rivals faced off at Hampden Park in the League Cup final on Sunday, a large section of Celtic supporters allegedly sang songs mocking the deaths of late Rangers figures David Cooper, Walter Smith, Jimmy Bell and Andy Goram.

And McGarry explained in his column [2 March] for The Herald that Hoops icon Burns who passed away in 2008, would have been “embarrassed” by such acts.

He said: “Yes, while words and songs may not break any bones, they can absolutely damage the reputation of our clubs, our game, and even our country as a whole.”

“Before the teams had even entered the arena, a large number of Celtic supporters had given air to a ditty that has caught on among them in recent times, mocking the deaths of Rangers figures Davie Cooper, Walter Smith, Jimmy Bell and Andy Goram to the tune of ABBA hit Super Trouper.”

“Quite what Celtic icon Tommy Burns, a great friend of Smith, would make of it, one can only wonder. But it is a safe bet to surmise he would be embarrassed and ashamed to hear fans of his beloved club lowering themselves to such depths.”

Apalling

The fierce rivalry of both teams is understandable given both of the club’s rich histories and competitiveness in the Scottish top flight, but the fact that some sections of the Celtic fans allegedly feel the need to insult some of Rangers’ late greats is really appalling.

There is time for fierce competition and competitiveness and there is also a time to be respectful and to have dignity, especially when celebrating those that have succeeded at both clubs in the past.

Something needs to be done if these reports are true. McGarry is right, the indecency and lack of respect from some supporters between the Old Firm rivals have simply plummeted to new and dreadful heights.

Life is more valuable than football and that fact really isn’t considered when the two fans are in the same stadium for an Old Firm game, and it’s a big shame for both clubs who have significant standings in the game.

In other Rangers news, the club have pulled off a major transfer coup with a deal already signed for a player who was interesting two English giants.
