
Rangers ready £3.5m swoop to sign Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman amid Allan McGregor development
Rangers are eyeing up a £3.5m swoop for Preston North End’s number one goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, according to the Scottish Sun.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a superb campaign for the Sky Bet Championship playoff hopefuls, featuring in all of their 34 league games this season and registering 14 clean sheets in the process.
The Gers are on the hunt for a new no.1 shot-stopper for Michael Beale, after it’s been reported that club veteran Allan McGregor will be leaving Ibrox this summer when his contract ends [Daily Record, 16 February].

According to the Scottish Sun [2 March], the Gers have sent scouts to watch Woodman a number of times this season, and the former Newcastle man reportedly “fits the bill” having already enjoyed two loan spells in Scotland with Kilmarnock and Aberdeen previously.
Superb recruitment
Woodman has enjoyed a superb breakout season at Deepdale, showcasing why he may well be one of the Championship’s best goalkeepers, featuring in all of Preston’s 34 games and recording a staggering 14 clean sheets – the second-best record in the division.
The 25-year-old also has previous in the Scottish top flight after enjoying loan spells with Kilmarnock in the 2016/17 campaign and Aberdeen the following season meaning he already has knowledge of the Scottish Premiership.

With the Gers in desperate need of a replacement for McGregor and for the mistake-prone Jon McLaughlin, Woodman represents the ideal candidate to not only replace the veteran duo but to become Beale’s long-term number-one.
It is a deal the Light Blues must get done as the club look to undergo a stark recruitment rebuild this summer. Woodman should be the club’s priority as £3.5m is an absolute snip to secure his signature.
