Rangers face impossible Nnamdi Ofoborh decision amid private issue behind the scenes at Ibrox
Rangers face an impossible decision on the situation of Nnamdi Ofoborh after it was revealed the player had an undisclosed heart issue upon his move to Ibrox.
The 23-year-old has not played a single minute of competitive football since March 2021 after he was diagnosed with a heart issue following his move from Wycombe nearly two years ago.
Upon arriving at the Gers, then-manager Steven Gerrard revealed that something had a “red flag” in the player’s ECG results for which the player was not allowed to play.
Since then, Michael Beale has provided updates on the ex-Bournemouth and Wanderers player, with his return to action still uncertain. Speaking to the press [as transcribed by Bucks Free Press, 1 February] in January, Beale revealed that the midfielder’s issue was still being looked at by club specialists.
He said: “Nnamdi’s situation is still with a specialist.
“You can imagine with that sort of situation, the people in the public and the people in the staff here [Rangers] are not experts.
“It’s an area that you need a specialist’s opinion, and importantly, you need to get more than one opinion.
“He has been able to do some physical activity, but the care and duty we have with Nnamdi is really big.
“We’re up to speed with it all but there is a lot of privacy surrounding this.”
Indeed, privacy will of course need to be considered and paramount in this case as the club assesses the player’s condition.
The club must ensure that if Oboforh is to return to action in the near future, it will not be a detriment to his health as we’ve seen and heard some devastating instances in which players have suffered from similar issues on a football pitch.
However, despite all that is ongoing behind the scenes regarding the player, the club will need to make a decision soon. Will the 23-year-old ever play for the Gers again if he is cleared to play? And what will happen to his contract if he is indeed cleared?
With Beale looking to undergo a stark rebuild of his bloated squad this summer, players who are deemed surplus to requirements will be given the chance to leave the club.
But regarding Ofoborh’s situation, it is really not known if he will ever play football again so considerable care must be taken in any potential decision taken by the Light Blues.
In other Rangers news, the club have pulled of a major transfer coup with a deal already signed for a player who was interesting two English giants.
