Racist insult hurled at Kyogo Furuhashi from Rangers hospitality seats in defeat v Celtic

The Herald columnist Graeme McGarry heard racist insults shouted from the Rangers hospitality seats in the Viaplay Cup final defeat to Celtic on Sunday.

Writing on The Herald website on 2 March, McGarry believes the shouts “that were racist in nature” were aimed at Celtic’s double goalscorer Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo, 28, was the subject of racist abuse from three Rangers fans last season with the Daily Record reporting that Ian McKenzie, 31, Mark Speirs, 27, and Dylan Devine, 26, had been fined a total of £1,550.

McGarry went into detail about unsavoury incidents that happened among both sets of supporters at Hampden Park on Sunday (26 February), while adding in his own personal account of what he heard shouted from one Rangers fan in the hospitality section.

He wrote: “Not far behind the press box too, in the Rangers hospitality seats, came shouts towards Celtic’s Japanese players that were racist in nature as well as being quite the indictment on the Scottish education system. It was difficult to know where to start when one gentleman implored the Rangers players to get ‘wired into that wee [expletive]’ – presumably referring to Kyogo, who had the ball at the time – but all it inspired from those around him were guffaws of laughter.

“These are just some of the extreme examples of the distasteful nature of the ‘bants’ at Sunday’s game.”

Disgusting

Rangers, the SFA, the SPFL and Hampden Park’s management need to root out this individual and ban them from Scottish football matches for life.

It’s an ugly reflection of society when people think it’s acceptable to shout things like that in public just because a player from the other side of the world has signed for a football team that you don’t like.

Whoever you are, you’re an idiot.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time that allegations of racism have been associated with Rangers fans and Celtic’s Japan international Kyogo.

He’s a good striker who’s scoring a lot of goals for Celtic.

It’s fine to have a dislike for him on a footballing level because of that but to show your inner hatred, ignorance, sheer idiocy and how racist you are because of that is unbelievable.

Rangers and Celtic fans did themselves no favours with events that happened at Hampden on Sunday.

Enough is enough. When is this going to stop?

In other Rangers news, the club have pulled off a major transfer coup with a deal already signed for a player who was interesting two English giants.
