Rangers mechanics ‘complicated’ as Ibrox funds in place for summer overhaul in transfer window
Rangers have funds in place to overhaul the squad in the summer transfer window, according to Scottish Daily Mail journalist Mark Wilson.
Writing in the print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail on Wednesday (1 March, page 70), Wilson reported that Champions League football, big-money sales and an operating profit up until June 2022 will contribute to what could be a big summer at Ibrox.
However, the low value of current Rangers players – mainly due to contract issues – are unlikely to help boost whatever budget Michael Beale is handed come the summer.

“Regardless of how this campaign concludes, with the Scottish Cup still a realistic hope, the mechanics of a revamp are complicated,” said Wilson.
“Financially, the Ibrox club is on a solid footing with Champions League income and the record £20million sale of Calvin Bassey following on from a £5.9million operating profit for the year to June 2022.
“Within the current squad, though, there aren’t many obvious routes to add significant sums to spending power. For a start, seven first-team contracts and two loan agreements are approaching their end. Among the remainder, spotting a real big-money sale isn’t particularly easy.”
Years of stubbornness
It’s hard to judge Ross Wilson when it comes to player sales.
He did brilliantly to get the fees he did for Bassey, who joined Ajax, and Joe Aribo, who joined Southampton for up to £10million.
However, year after year of failing to cash in on players when they’ve been at their optimal value has cost us.
Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Glen Kamara all come to mind.

Those three players have been brilliant in spells at Rangers but none of them are as good as they were now and none of them are worth the money they were a couple of seasons ago – or even 12 months ago.
Morelos and Kent are out of contract soon and Kamara’s form is terrible with the Finland international producing a shocker in the midfield on Sunday in the Viaplay Cup final defeat to Celtic.
All three have been linked with the Premier League in the last few years. In truth, none of them are anywhere near good enough anymore.
In other Rangers news, fans have been called “disgusting” after what happened at the Viaplay Cup final.
