Barry Ferguson wowed by ‘top-class’ Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor

Barry Ferguson feels that Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has still got another year left in him.

The 41-year-old goalkeeper has a contract at the club until the end of the season, and there’s no clarity on whether he will retire or continue playing.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson suggested that Michael Beale must sit down now with the veteran keeper and try to find out what he wants to do next.

“I think you have got a guy who can go on for another 12 months,” said Ferguson on Go Radio (27 February).

“Solid, reliable and top-class goalkeeper – that’s what Allan McGregor is and I don’t see any signs of him getting any slower.

“I have heard him saying he is taking one game at a time but if I am Michael Beale, I’d be sitting down with Allan McGregor now and trying to find out where his mind is in terms of what he is wanting to do.

“Ultimately, it would come down to Allan whether he wants to retire or play on but for me, I think he has still got another good season left in him.”

Move on

McGregor is a club legend and he has been a terrific servant for the club. Goalkeepers usually have long careers, and McGregor appears to enjoy his playing time.

He has been a key player for Beale once again, and definitely the best of the lot the club has got.

The club extended his contract last summer, and Ferguson feels that McGregor is good enough for another season.

Now there’s a common saying that age doesn’t matter if you’re good enough, and with that logic, McGregor should continue at the club.

But this is hampering Rangers in the long run. The club should be aiming to bring in fresh young goalkeepers who can represent the club for years to come.

At the moment, Robbie McCrorie looks like someone who can replace McGregor after he retires. But, Beale should be on the lookout to sign exciting young goalkeepers from elsewhere.

The decision rests with Beale as well as with McGregor. Even if he wants to continue, the manager must make a decision whether he sees him as the first choice next season.

In other Rangers news, the club have pulled of a major transfer coup with a deal already signed for a player who was interesting two English giants.
