Tam Cowan blown away by Celtic finances in ‘tough’ Rangers comparison

The Daily Record’s Tam Cowan has claimed Rangers face a “tough job” closing the gap to Celtic due to the finances available to the Parkhead side.

Michael Beale suffered his first defeat as the Gers’ boss on Sunday as Ange Postecoglou’s side lifted their 21st League Cup title.

Cowan has claimed The Hoops’ impressive recruitment and financial muscle means the Light Blues will struggle to compete over the coming years.

“When you sum it all up they don’t have players who are as good as the Celtic players and any Rangers fan will tell you that second is no use,” said Cowan (PLZ Football Show, 10m 31s, 28 February).

“They will absolutely have to change the players if they can afford them but then you got back to the recent financial figures which have been released by Celtic and think wow.

“The money they have at their disposal and seemingly never-ending conveyer belt of talent that they can bring in from the far east, so it’s a tough job for Rangers.”

Change needed

The appointment of Beale and the signings of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin show that change is afoot at Ibrox. However, it’s going to take a long time and patience will be required. The January signings will hopefully just be the beginning of what should be a larger overhaul.

Too many players started the final against Celtic who are well past their sell-by date. The Hoops have evolved whilst the Gers have stood still in recent seasons and the run to the Europa League final was potentially a distraction from growing issues which have now come to the surface.

The January window saw some positive signs, but it’s the summer window which define the men who currently occupy the Ibrox boardroom. Douglas Park has to allow Beale to land his number-one targets and Ross Wilson must adequately support the Gers’ current boss over the coming months.

We will certainly be able to cast a judgement come the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

In other Rangers news, the club have signed a player from under the noses of a big European side.
