Stan Collymore makes Rangers & Celtic ‘tea party’ comparison to Greek derby clash

Stan Collymore believes the Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic is like a “tea party” compared to the Greek derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos.

Collymore referenced when he arrived at Athens to join Greek giants Panathinaikos and was greeted by 6000 supporters which meant he had to divert to another airport.

There’s no doubt that the Greek rivalry is one of the wildest in the beautiful game but to say the Old Firm is like a “tea party” in comparison is slightly harsh.

“I went to Athens to sign for Panathinaikos ( omnipresent Paul Stretford in the foreground),” said Collymore on Twitter. (28 February)

“6000 supporters turned up so had to divert to another airport.

“The rivalry makes Celtic v Rangers look like a tea party.”

Long way to go.

Rangers have a long way to go to catch Celtic at this moment in time and that was never more apparent than in the Viaplay Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

It was a learning curve for all those wearing a Light Blue shirt and one for Michael Beale to mull over in the coming weeks and months.

It’s easy to get carried away and look at the negatives from the clash but in reality, it’s far too tough to compete with the depth and talent Celtic currently have.

The summer transfer window should and must be used as a platform to narrow this ever-growing gap and failure to do so will only result in more misery.

Rangers could still face Celtic a further three times before the season comes to an end, so there could be plenty of opportunities to rectify Sunday’s loss.

Beale and co can lick their wounds for now, but performance and a greater show of desire and attitude will be needed the next time an Old Firm takes place.

In other Rangers news, the club are in line for a multi-million windfall from the Premier League after a £10m Auchenhowie milestone was reached.
