Ange Postecoglou singles out Ally McCoist with quick question after Rangers loss v Celtic

Ange Postecoglou asked Ally McCoist in tongue-in-cheek humour if there was any chance of a lift to Celtic Park after Rangers lost 2-1 against Celtic in the Viaplay Cup final on Sunday (26 February) at Hampden Park.

Stephen McGowan reported for Scottish Daily Mail (page 2, 27 February) that the Celtic boss allowed himself a “moment of mischief” after he concluded his post-match media duties.

When Postecoglou was linked with the Leeds United job, McCoist joked that he would drive him to Elland Road, and it seems that he hasn’t forgotten those comments from the Gers legend.

“Conducting his post-match media duties at Hampden yesterday, Ange Postecoglou allowed himself a moment of mischief,” wrote McGowan for Scottish Daily Mail.

“As his interview with broadcasters, Viaplay came to an end, he turned to Rangers legend Ally McCoist and, tongue lodged firmly in cheek, asked if there was any chance of a lift back to Celtic Park?

“When the Australian was linked with the Leeds United job earlier this month, McCoist joked of driving him there in person.

“Regrettably for Rangers, he’s still ruling the roost in Glasgow. Still winning trophies deep into his second season as Parkhead manager.”

Blow

It’s a massive psychological blow for Rangers and it only goes to show that Michael Beale has got a lot of work to do to make the squad better.

It was his first defeat since taking charge of Rangers and it was a big one. The first half was very poor for the Gers and the pressure mounted after they conceded the goal towards the end of the half.

In the second half, they made yet another defensive error and allowed Celtic to take a 2-0 lead.

Rangers did make a comeback after Alfredo Morelos found the net. The Gers created several fantastic opportunities, but one can’t help but wonder why didn’t they approach the game with positive intent from the beginning.

The team selection can be questioned as well. Malik Tillman and John Lundstram were doubtful for this fixture, but they were drafted into the starting line-up. Tillman was nowhere near his best, and probably Todd Cantwell would have been a better option.

Beale also needs to learn how to handle the press. The spat with Chris Sutton before the game was unnecessary and going forward, he should allow football to do the talking for him.

In other Rangers news, the club have pulled of a major transfer coup with a deal already signed for a player who was interesting two English giants.
