BBC Sport pundit blasts Connor Goldson for ‘huge’ error in Rangers loss v Celtic in Viaplay Cup final

Connor Goldson made a “huge mistake” in the build-up to Celtic’s opening goal of the Viaplay Cup final as Rangers beaten 2-1, according to Willie Miller.

The Gers were beaten thanks to two very similar goals from Kyogo either side of half-time, with Alfredo Morelos’ strike not enough to spark another comeback at Hampden Park.

But speaking on BBC Sportsound, as quoted by the BBC live blog (26 February, 15:59), former Aberdeen man Miller criticised centre-back Goldson for his role in the opening goal.

“Connor Goldson shouldn’t get sucked out in the first place by Daizen Maeda,” he said.

“It’s a huge mistake from the Rangers centre-half.”

Margins

There are margins in games of football at the highest level, and the finest margins of them all tend to settle things.

That’s the case here, because Rangers were by far the better team in the second half of the game but the first half showing was poor.

Despite that though, the team were all set to go into the half-time break level giving them a chance to reset. Goldson switched off for a moment and it cost us the goal, and gave them all the momentum they needed.

Now we have to go away and lick our wounds to hunt them down in the title race, and prepare for the double-header we still have with them in the league before a potential rematch in the Scottish Cup final later in the season.

We’ve shown we’re capable of battling with them, we now need to just refine those margins to improve. But we’re at the start of a process, so get behind the boys because we will be successful again under Beale.
