Sam Allardyce reveals long-standing interest in Rangers and Celtic jobs

Sam Allardyce admits he would have joined Celtic or Rangers had the time been right but does not see it happening any time soon.

Both clubs have established managers in Ange Postecoglou and Michael Beale who are doing well and Allardyce was never a shoo-in before they were appointed either.

However, he says that if he was approached at the right time, he would’ve said yes to either of the two clubs.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Allardyce said, “With Scottish parents you’d think that at some stage someone would have pointed that out for me. I think at the right time I would have gone, yes.

“Because of the size of the clubs and the size of the fans and the fact that you’re winning all of the time. I went to West Ham in the Championship for a different challenge and we only lost eight games that season, what a pleasure that was, only eight miserable weekends. The rest is glorious.

“You go to Rangers or Celtic and what you have to instil and I’ve listened to this off of Alex (Ferguson) and Jose (Mourinho) , you need to find what to do as a manager to get your players to keep winning because keeping winning is so much harder than keeping losing. You can’t keep winning because they switch off.”

Fortunate

Rangers are lucky that Allardyce never managed them as his style of football would bore fans to death.

He’s not the most charismatic of managers anyway and there’s little evidence that he would connect with the fans.

Beale despite his relatively short time at the club already appears to have become a fan favourite and he feels like he is a Rangers fan.

Allardyce has been a journeyman in football and is noted for keeping teams up in the Premier League and got the moniker of being a relegation expert.

He won 178 games in the English top flight, but lost over 200 games and also drew 145.

He would not be the one to restore Rangers to their glory days and it’s bold of him to think that they or even Celtic would want him at the club.

In other Rangers news, the club are in line for a multi-million windfall from the Premier League after a £10m Auchenhowie milestone was reached.
