Michael Beale wants to sign ‘powerful’ new midfielder in Rangers summer rebuild, five new starters needed

Rangers boss Michael Beale will be undergoing a stark rebuild this summer and is on the lookout for a “powerful” central midfielder to beef up his squad, according to The Athletic.

The Gers have been superb since Beale’s appointment in November, winning 13 of his 14 games in charge and drawing the other against Old Firm rivals Celtic last month.

The Light Blues managed to add to their squad last month, bringing in Todd Cantwell from Norwich City and Nicolas Raskin from Belgian giants Standard Liege.

And according to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell [22 February] reporting for Rangers, the club are on the hunt for five new additions this summer as Beale looks to match the untold quality within his fierce rivals.

He said in his article: “For his rebuild, Beale wants a first-choice goalkeeper, a left-sided centre-back, a powerful central midfielder, a left-footed attacker, and another striker.

“That is five players of starting quality and, should Ryan Kent or Alfredo Morelos leave, there may be another player or two needed.”

Huge summer

This coming summer will be huge for Beale and Rangers as the club undergo their first real transfer window of much rebuilding and transformation under his stewardship.

The target for the club is to match those lofty heights they reached during the 2021 Scottish Premiership triumph and to do that, Beale will certainly need five to six quality additions, especially if key stars Morelos and Kent leave.

The Light Blues are certainly on the right track and their progress will be tested this Sunday when they take on Celtic in the Viaplay Cup final.

Whatever the result, the league title still remains the priority and despite sitting nine points from the fierce rivals currently, Beale will be desperate to put that right next season from the off.

The signings of Cantwell and Raskin represent a tremendous start in their squad rebuild, but more quality is needed if the Gers are to match Celtic, and most of all topple them for all the gold next season.

In other Rangers news, the club are in line for a multi-million windfall from the Premier League after a £10m Auchenhowie milestone was reached.
