Rangers must be bold this summer and axe Jon McLaughlin for Norwich City’s Angus Gunn

Rangers must be bold this summer and axe Jon McLaughlin for Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn, with Michael Beale desperately needing a reliable shot-stopper between the sticks.

According to The US Sun [12 February], the former England under-21 international is being watched by the Gers and holds a market value of just £3m, as Michael Beale sets his sights on a new long-term number one.

Gers transfer chief Ross Wilson knows the player from his time at Southampton and is known to be an admirer of the player who has somewhat fallen out of favour at Norwich City.

Norwich City are reportedly in a strong negotiating position as the former Southampton shot-stopper still holds two years remaining on his current deal at Carrow Road.

However, according to GiveMeSport journalist Dean Jones, senior figures behind the scenes at Ibrox believe Gunn could be a good asset at the club: “There are definitely one or two people within the setup that really do believe that he would be a good asset for the club going forward.

“They think he could lift himself to be a really good player for Rangers.”

With Beale said to be on a desperate hunt [Daily Record,16 February] for a new goalkeeping number one, Gunn certainly fits the bill at the Ibrox.

Allan McGregor could hang up his gloves at the end of the season which leaves Jon McLaughlin as the Gers’ only real capable number one between the sticks.

However, if the Light Blues hold the ambition of toppling Celtic next season, they would need to be bold this summer go on a Manchester City and Liverpool-style bold hunt and axe their only real goalkeeping choice for one who could transform the whole team in the long run.

McLaughlin has struggled to establish himself at the Ibrox this season, despite Beale’s constant wish to start him ahead of McGregor at times this season.

Rangers

The 35-year-old has made a catalogue of errors leading to goals this season notably in matches against Kilmarnock and Ross County, clubs that don’t even match up to Rangers in terms of quality and it is an area of Beale’s squad that needs serious addressing.

Signing Gunn at a relatively small price of £3m is an absolute snip, and if Beale can get him back to the levels that propelled him to become one of England’s brightest young goalkeepers a few years ago, it’s a deal which could go down as one of the best the club have done in a long while.
