Rangers boardroom locked shut as yet another Ibrox drama emerges from behind the scenes

It’s a never-ending soap opera behind the scenes at Rangers.

While things have started to improve on the pitch under Michael Beale, you’re never too far away from matters taking place upstairs at Ibrox to make the news.

This week, it’s been confirmed that Dave King has backed out of an agreement with Club 1872 to sell off his shares to the fan-led group.

Rangers

As reported by STV on Tuesday (14 February), Club 1872 will not take any more shares from former Ibrox chief King, which would have made them the biggest single shareholder of the Scottish Premiership club.

King shared his reasons for why the deal had been terminated, ranging from saying that fans didn’t see the club as being under threat any more and also that the UK’s cost-of-living crisis may have also played a role.

He’s right. You cannot argue with those points.

Interestingly, one of those reasons King gave was because of “the club’s recent campaign against Club 1872 and its officers”.

Rangers’ board took aim at Club 1872 last March [STV], accusing the supporters-led group of being “intent on causing damage” to the Govan club.

It’s not the only instance in the last year where the board have hit out at people trying to buy their way into Rangers.

On 22 August, the Scottish Sun reported how Rangers tried to sue American businesswoman Kyle Fox “over claims she tried to flog the club behind their back”.

Now, we’re not saying whether or not Fox would be a good person to have on the board at Ibrox – we don’t know that and we probably never will.

However, the way the club shut down all talk of any investment from Fox suggested that the boardroom is locked shut – they don’t want anyone else coming into the building at all.

There’s a real theme of stubbornness at Rangers, it feels.

It feels like there’s an unwillingness to go through change and that has been relayed onto the field too.

Beale had to inherit a tired, ageing squad from Giovanni van Bronckhorst thanks to a failure to move on from the likes of Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos in recent years. Why’s it so hard for the club to give up on players in their late 30s or early 40s or are going out of contract?

Stubbornness has seeped down from the very top in the last few years and guess what? It’s cost us in the league, where Celtic are now back ahead of us.

For how much longer is this Rangers board going to slam the door in the faces of potential investors who could help the club out?

How many more titles do Celtic need to win before the board finally realises that they might be the biggest problem at Ibrox right now?

In other Rangers news, a Ligue 1 manager has been wowed by this Ibrox star who cannot be replaced overnight.
