Behind-the-scenes Rangers chiefs want to sign Angus Gunn from Norwich City

Rangers have set their sights on signing Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn, with senior figures behind the scenes at Ibrox believing he’d be a “good asset” at the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Scottish Sun reported [11 February] that Rangers are monitoring Gunn as they seek a long-term replacement for Allan McGregor.

Gers chief Ross Wilson knows the goalkeeper from his time at Southampton and it’s understood he could look to move for the keeper who has recently fallen out of favour at Carrow Road.

Norwich City are reportedly in a strong negotiating position as the former Southampton shot-stopper still holds two years remaining on his current deal at Carrow Road.

Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport [14 February] has claimed that the 27-year-old is highly regarded by senior figures at the Scottish giants. He said: “There are definitely one or two people within the setup that really do believe that he would be a good asset for the club going forward.

“They think he could lift himself to be a really good player for Rangers.”

Great choice

The Gers are in desperate need of fresh blood in the goalkeeping positions with both McGregor and Jon McLaughlin in the twilight of their careers.

Both players have been constantly chopped and changed throughout Michael Beale’s tenure wit the former Queens Park Rangers manager still undecided as to his first choice between the sticks.

A younger keeper, like Gunn, could well be the route for the Light Blues’ boss to go down – a player they can build their defence around for the future.

Gunn hasn’t had the best of times at Norwich City of late but has shown at points in his career that he’s a very capable goalkeeper if given the confidence and opportunities to deliver.

He’d certainly get that under Beale’s stewardship, whilst making his mark within a very exciting and exuberant batch of players. Getting in a fresh and younger first-choice option in goal is and should remain a top priority as the summer transfer window draws near.
